A U.S. Army sergeant who was shot dead by his pregnant mistress while she was driving on a highway in Georgia, has been arrested in North Carolina.
Alonzo Dargan Jr., 30, arrested at Fort Bragg in Cumberland County on Thursday.
Dargan is on active duty at Fort Bragg as a staff sgeant, Channel 2 Action News reports.
Dargan is charged with the murder of Akeila Ware, 29, of LaGrange, Ga., And their unborn child, while he was driving on Highway 18 in Troup County, Ga. On Tuesday, October 5th.
Dargan was charged with murder, feticide and possession of a firearm while committing a crime.
Authorities initially believed Ware was shot in a road rage incident.
After Ware was shot, his loaded Honda Accord veered off the highway and crashed near E. Drummond Road.
Georgia State Patrol soldiers responding to a report of a car crash learned that Ware had no response inside the car, according to authorities.
Ware and her unborn child were pronounced dead on arrival at a Columbus hospital.
Ware, a single mother of five, is expecting her 6th child.
Dargan was married with children. None of Ware’s other children gave birth to Dargan.
Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff announced Dargan was arrested at a press conference Friday morning.
“I can’t believe someone shot and killed a young mother with five children,” Woodruff said. “And on top of that, he was killed and he had a baby inside him that resulted in the baby’s death.”
Woodruff said Dargan grew up in Troup County.
