Smart, 33, who was kidnapped from his home in Salt Lake City at age 14 and later rescued from his captors, said he was saddened to learn about What happened of 22-year-old blogger Petito.
“In Gabby’s particular case, I mean, I’m alive, and I’m home, and her tragedy didn’t end that way,” Smart said in a sit-down interview with Jada Pinkett Smith and mother of Jada, Adrienne Banfield-Norris (aka Gammy), which premiered on Wednesday, Oct. 13. “Knowing what’s on the other side and possibly what could have happened and what could have delivered his last moments and understanding probably many in his feeling, heartbreaking, ”added Smart.
Petito died by being held “three to four weeks” before his body was found in Grand Teton National Park, a Wyoming coroner announced Tuesday, Oct. 12. Meanwhile, Petito’s fiancé, Brian Laundrie, remained missing after his return to Florida alone in their 2012 Ford transit van after a cross-country trek.
Laundrie, 23, was named as someone interested in Petito’s disappearance on Sept. 15, shortly after he was last seen walking after a camping trip with his parents.
“The Labadors based the date Brian left on their memory on certain events,” their family attorney, Steven Bertolino, previously said To the Touch in a statement. “With further FBI communication and confirmation of the Mustang being at the Laundrie residence on Wednesday, Sept. 15, we believe the day Brian left to walk into the preserve was Monday, Sept. 13.”
Smart said Petito’s story resonated with him after going through a terrifying experience on his own. the My Story the author was kidnapped by knifepoint in his bedroom in 2002 at the age of 14, suffering sexual abuse and further horrors at the hands of those who arrested him, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee.
Nine months later, a 15-year-old Smart was found in Sandy, Utah, on March 12, 2003. Her captor Mitchell is currently serving a prison sentence, but Barzee was released from prison. behind bars in September 2018 after securing a plea deal for the time delivered.
Awakening to her miraculous rescue, Smart becomes a mother of three children: Chloe, 6, James, 4, and 2-year-old Olivia shared by her husband, Mateo Gilmour.
“My parents always said that the worst part of going to me was not knowing [if I was alive or dead], ”Smart shared during his emotional interview, given the importance of providing awareness to all people who are missing, including those from injured communities.
“When I was taken to the mountain the first night I was kidnapped, I asked him if he would rape me and kill me and if he would do that, would he be able to do it almost to my house because it was important for me to find my parents. my body and they’ll know I didn’t run away, ”Smart added.“ And so, I mean, if I think Gabby Petito, when I think of all the other victims, I feel they still deserve even a little bit to be found so that their stories have an end as well. “
