Damon Wayans Says Dave Chappelle ‘Freed Slaves’ By Encouraging Comedians to Speak Up
Damon Wayans support Dave Chappelle amid his later criticism!
As you may recall, Dave Chappelle has received waves of backlash since his latest stand-up specialist–The Closer–Debut on Netflix last week. In the specialist, the 48-year-old comedian controversially stated that she is a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) and does not believe that trans women are “real” women:
“I’m a TERF team! Gender is real. Every man in this room, every man on Earth, has to go through a woman’s legs to be on Earth. This is the truth. Now, I’m not saying that to say that non-trans women aren’t women, I’m just saying that those are the ones they get… you know what I mean? I’m not saying it’s not p * ssy, but it’s Beyond P * ssy or Impossible P * ssy. It tastes like p * ssy, but that’s not what it is, is it? That’s not blood, that’s beet juice. ”
from The Closer premiered, various organizations condemned the special and Dave Chappelle. One group, the National Black Justice Coalition, stated:
“In 2021 which is on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States – most of whom are Black transgender people – Netflix needs to be more aware. Ongoing transphobia perpetuates violence .Netflix should immediately remove ‘The Closer’ from its platform and directly apologize to the transgender community. ”
However, others like the Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos backs Dave Chappelle and The Closer in the face of multiple calls for the platform to pull the special. In part, Ted Sarandos supported Dave Chappelle by saying:
“Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today, and we have a long-standing relationship with her.… Stand-up comedy has to push boundaries. Some people see the art of standing up as a rebelliousness but our members are happy with it, and it is an important part of our offering to the interior. “
Now, with me as a comedian Damon Wayans also showed support for Dave Chappelle. Yesterday (Monday, October 11th), seen by the paparazzi Damon Wayans at LAX and asked for his opinion on the present Dave Chappelle controversy. The 61-year-old responded with a positive comparison Chappelle to the painter Vincent van Gogh and said that comedians are “slaves of PC culture”:
“I feel like Dave set the slaves free. Comedians, they’re slaves to PC culture and he’s just, you know, as an actor, he’s van Gogh. Cut off his ear. He tried to tell us it was okay. ”
“I just thought he was saying ‘Hey you know what, with all that I have, I’m not afraid to lose it for freedom of speech. You can’t edit yourself.’ Mercedes has done a good job car, but they have to do a lot of damage before they can fix it. “
Damon Wayans then said that, while he could not speak to The Closer specifically, he thinks the controversy indicates more conversation is needed:
“I can’t talk about the content of the show, but what I’m saying is there’s a lot more conversation that we need. There’s a need to look us in the eye and go to ‘You’re no longer free in this country. You’re not free to say what you want – you say what we want to say, if we don’t cancel you. ‘That’s what we should have talked about. “
